Ferme Mariposa Farm Weddings

Eric + Betty-Ann’s Rustic Wedding at Ferme Mariposa Farm

(Ottawa Wedding Photographers)

Happy 1st Anniversary Betty-Ann and Eric!  I have reposted their blog post to reminisce about their wonderful wedding day one year ago today.  Enjoy.

On June 1st I had the honour to photograph Eric and Betty-Ann’s rustic style wedding at Mariposa Farm in Plantaneget, ON (about a 1/2 hr east of Ottawa).  Mariposa Farm is a duck farm, which supplies Ottawa area restaurants with duck and foie gras.  They also have chickens, geese, pigs, cows, horses and two big dogs at the farm.

A few weeks before their wedding, I photographed Eric and Betty-Ann’s engagement photos, which were shot in various parts of Ottawa to give an urban feel to contrast their rustic style wedding photos.

I was nervous about the weather because there was a 70% chance of rain, including thunder storms in the afternoon and the wedding ceremony was at 4:00pm.  However, as I drove towards the farm, the sky began to clear up and the sun came out, so I kept my fingers crossed that the nice weather would last and it did.  IT DID!  YAHOO!!!!  In fact, it lasted all day, until we finished shooting all of our outdoor shots and went inside for the reception.  Then it turned dark, the skies opened up and it poured rain–like raining cats and dogs rain!  I was SO thankful that the weather held off until we we got what we needed to do finished.

Everything turned out so well.  The decorations around the farm were so cute and colourful that they far exceeded my expectations.  I was thrilled when I saw them.  Everywhere you looked, there was something so cute and rustic.  I mean, the salt and pepper shakers alone had me excited to start shooting detail shots.  Oh, and you just have to look at the photos to see how gorgeous the wedding arch for the ceremony was with its tree branches, bright red draped fabric and a rainbow of coloured paper lanterns.   The details are definitely Pinterest worthy.

I was happy that the weather stayed nice for as long as we needed it and I was even happier when I came home, uploaded the photos onto my computer and started to view them larger than what I was seeing on my camera’s screen. There is so many bright colours and happiness in the photos.

If you’re newly engaged and looking for a wedding photographer, I would love to hear from you and all about your fantastic wedding plans.  Contact me today to book a consultation.

Brad + Nicole’s Ottawa Wedding Photos

Since it’s such a cold winter day, I thought I would repost one of the summer weddings that I shot to help warm things up, or at least make things seem a littler nicer with these summer wedding photos.

Saturday August 18, was a perfect day in every way.  It was sunny, but only around 25 degrees outside.  Not too shabby for the middle of August in Ottawa.  With the help of my assistant, Jackie, as well as my second shooter, Heather, I had the privilege of documenting the wedding day of a fantastic couple.  After I shot their engagement portraits last fall, I was kind of giddy because as you can clearly see they are a gorgeous looking couple, as well as photogenic.  However, what makes it even nicer is that they are both beautiful on the inside too.  I gathered this by how they acted towards everyone on their wedding day as well as by listening to all of the wonderful things that their friends and family had to say about them during the speeches.

We had a lot of fun during the formal portrait time at Mooney’s bay park as well as #33 fire station.  I mean, does it get any better than having photos taken with a fire truck?  We also had fun during the reception.  One of the highlights of the evening was a custom-made photo booth made by Nicole’s brother.  How cool is that?!?!?  Not only did it have their names painted on it, but it also came with a nice back drop and lots of novelty accessories, including mustaches, bow ties and glasses.  I hope no one minded, but Jackie and I got in on the photo booth action too (see last photo).  😉

Congratulations Brad and Nicole.  May life bring you both much love and happiness together.  🙂

Ottawa Winter Wedding Photography

Jason + Stacy’s Winter Wedding Photos in Ottawa

Last weekend my second shooter, Michelle, and I shot Jason and Stacy’s winter wedding photos in Ottawa.  I was looking forward to it, but at the same time crossing my fingers and toes that: a) it wouldn’t be -20°C or colder, b) there wouldn’t be a freak snow storm on the big day and c) there would still be some pretty white snow on the ground for the outdoor photos and not a slushy mess.  I was not disappointed.  Not only was it a balmy -5°C, but it snowed a lot the day before so that there was a lot of beautiful fluffy snow everywhere.

Jason and Stacy originally wanted their wedding photos at Bate Island, but we ended up shooting the engagement photo session there.  Instead, we went to Hog’s back park for the wedding photos.

The whole day went so well and I am thrilled with how beautifully the photos turned out, but really when you have a winter wonderland as a backdrop and such a handsome couple, how can you go wrong?  Stacy and Jason, I wish you much happiness and love in your lives and I hope that you will enjoy your wedding day memories when you look back at these photos.

Strathmere Inn Weddings

James + Shawna’s Wedding at Strathmere Inn

A few weeks ago Heather and I photographed James and Shawna’s rustic wedding at Strathmere Inn.  I have wanted to shoot a wedding at Strathmere for quite a while as it is such a beautiful wedding venue.  It did not disappoint as far as beautiful spots to shoot wedding photos.  There are so many rustic spots at this place out in the country.  It went along the same theme as James and Shawna’s country style engagement photos that I shot at the Experimental Farm in the summer.  It was a gorgeous fall day with the sun shining and the trees filled with colourful fall leaves.  My only regret is that there wasn’t enough time to shoot at all of the great spots that I had found while scouting the location earlier.

I really liked the personal touch of having a cousin, Rev. John D. McIntyre, marry them.  They also had some other personal touches throughout their wedding, such as the three sunflowers in Shawna’s bouquet, which represented each of her grandparents that has passed away.  (There were three sunflowers on their wedding cake too.)  They also had turkey feathers incorporated into their table flower arrangements as well as James’s boutonnière.  James is an avid hunter and he and some of his friends went hunting that morning at the crack of dawn and shot their quota within the first hour of hunting.  And last, but not least, James borrowed his ex-boss’s HUGE tractor and drove it to Strathmere so that we could use it for some of the photos.  You can’t even imagine how excited I was to use that massive tractor in some of the photos!  That is right up my alley!

I must mention that I loved the many kind words given by friends and family during the speeches of how kind, friendly and determined in nature both James and Shawna are.  And I loved how James thanked the farmers who attended their wedding as this is a very busy time of year for them.  I really love working with down-to-earth people and humble country folks (I say that with most sincere kindness).  And I loved listening to James and his mother quote verses from the Bible in their speeches.  There is something about these people that make my job more enjoyable and less stressful.  I left their reception feeling in great spirits and extremely happy that these two found a mate as kind and thoughtful as they each are.  Congratulations James and Shawna.  May God bless you with much happiness as well as wisdom to make the right choices to bless you and your family.

Bate Island and Remic Rapids Park Engagement Photos

Jason +Stacy’s Engagement Photo Session

Last week I photographed Jason and Stacy’s engagement photos at Bate Island as well as at the John Ceprano rock sculptures at Remic Rapids Park.  I have wanted to do a portrait session at the rock sculptures for months, but when I scouted the location the first time this past June, the part of the river that has the sculptures was still too high that the sculptures were still underwater.  Although I was disappointed not to be able to shoot portraits there earlier this summer, I was very happy that I finally got a chance to shoot portraits there.

Thanksgiving Monday (the day we did the shoot) was a strange day, weather-wise with dark clouds, then sun, dark clouds, sun, etc.  However, in the afternoon and early evening the clouds dissipated and the sun shone though making for some beautiful light.

Jason and Stacy showed up looking fantastic.  Stacy had a little collection of spectacular boots and shoes to use for the session.  Jason thought it was overkill, but as a girl I completely understood.  Although she didn’t end up wearing all of the shoes that she brought, a girl can never have too many shoes at her disposal.

Thanks to Jason and Stacy for putting up with some of my ideas for the shots–even if it meant that Jason was blinded by the sun so that I could use the light to show off Stacy’s cool looking eyes.  Really, this girl has an amazing colour of eyes.  I am looking forward to photographing Jason and Stacy’s wedding this February.  In the meantime, enjoy the photos from their engagement photo session.

*Update:  Check out Jason and Stacy’s wedding photos.

Rustic Carp Wedding

Doug + Diana’s Rustic Wedding in Carp

A few weeks ago my second shooter, Heather, and I shot Doug and Diana’s rustic wedding in Carp.  What can I say about this wedding?  Well, first, we got the great diffused lighting that we wanted in order to take photos of the guys and girls before the ceremony.

When going over the wedding details with Doug and Diana about their rustic styled wedding, I was so excited to hear that they wanted to have their photos taken at an old farm in Carp near where Diana grew up.  About a week before the wedding, the three of us went to scout out this farm in order to see where we could take the photos of the guys.  Let me tell you, Valca’s farm is a photographer’s dream location.  There are several old barns with that cool looking barnwood, old tractors, fields, an old brick farm house, old farming equipment.  I was in heaven and could have shot there all day.  However, the show must go on, so I shot some photos of the guys there and then let Heather shoot the rest while I left to go shoot some photos of Diana and the girls.

And Diana’s location did not disappoint either.  They had set up a little photo location in front of a corn field with bales of hay, pumpkins and mums.  I was happy to see such a country looking display.  This is right up my alley as far as what I love to photograph. You can view Doug and Diana’s engagement session at Hog’s Back / Mooney’s Bay Park a few months ago.

Congratulations Doug and Diana.  May life bring you much happiness in your new lives as husband and wife.

If you’re currently planning a rustic wedding, I would LOVE to hear from you.  E-mail me to book a wedding consultation.  You can tell me all about your wonderful wedding plans.  😀

Billings Estate Wedding Photography

Christian + Jordan’s Wedding at Billings Estate Museum

Last weekend my second shooter, Heather, and I photographed Christian and Jordan’s wedding at the beautiful Billings Estate in Ottawa.  I have wanted to shoot there for a while and was happy to finally get the opportunity.  It is a really beautiful wedding venue for any engaged couples searching for the perfect wedding location.

I’m not gonna lie.  I was pretty stressed about the weather as there was a 70% chance of rain and they were getting married outside.  Also, their first look photos and all of the family and bridal portraits were scheduled to be taken at the arboretum.   We could have taken the photos at an indoor location if it rained, but I prefer to shoot outdoors.  Also, Christian and Jordan really wanted to have their photos taken at the arboretum as it is a place that they hold dear to them.  We were all so thrilled that the rains held off the entire day and we were able to take all of the photos outside and have a dry outdoor ceremony.  Yay for not raining!  And yay for shooting my very first wedding couple’s first look.  It turned out so beautifully.

Jordan looked beautiful in her simply chic styled wedding dress, while Christian looked handsome in his suit.  With a pretty pair like that and the gorgeous backdrops of Billings Estate and the Arboretum, we couldn’t help but get great photos of this awesome couple, despite the very overcast day and not a lot of available light.

It was also nice to scout out the various locations at the Arboretum with Jordan in order to get those special spots that hold some meaning to them.  It worked out really well to scout out the locations with Jordan, because both of them really wanted to have Carleton University in the background for some of their formal portraits.  I understand why, since Christian just graduated from there with a Ph.D. and Jordan is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Carleton.

I shot Christian and Jordan’s engagement photo session a few months ago.  As a wedding photographer I highly recommend that all couples do engagement portraits with their wedding photographer so that they can get to know their photographer better, so that it’s not so awkward on the wedding day smiling for a stranger.  Likewise, the photographer will get to know the couple better and know how to approach photographing them on their wedding day.

Congratulations Christian and Jordan.  May life bring you all of the happiness and love possible, and then some.

Ottawa & Gatineau photographers Monterey Hotel Weddings

Duane + Michelle’s Monterey Hotel Wedding

A week and a half ago I had the privilege of photographing Duane and Michelle’s wedding at the Monterey Hotel with my second shooter, Michelle.  It was a beautiful sunny day with no cloud in sight.  Not too hot either.  Much like the day that I photographed their engagement session in Gatineau park.

Michelle looked beautiful in her wedding gown and I gotta say Duane cleans up quite nicely himself.  I loved the flower bouquets that had orchids and hydrangeas.  I didn’t realize until halfway through that their bouquets actually matched the flowers at the Monterey Hotel, since the hotel has a bunch of beautiful hydrangea bushes.

I loved, loved, loved the rustic touches in their wedding, such as the table numbers made out of wood as well as the cupcake stands.  They were all made by Michelle’s father, with some help from Michelle who burned the numbers on the table number signs.  And since their wedding colour was green, they also had green granny smith apples in glass vases on all of the tables.

Everyone was in good spirits and all smiles, which made for some lovely photos.  Duane and Michelle were beaming all day with happiness.  It was so nice to be able to capture some of those happy moments.  I hope that you enjoy them.

Experimental Farm Engagement Photos

Experimental Farm E-Session (Ottawa Engagement Photographers)

Last week I photographed James and Shawna’s engagement photos.  Both grew up in the country and both are very down-to-earth, so they wanted a rustic style engagement session.  Now, I am a huge fan of anything remotely rustic (barns, fields, farm posts, hay bales) and so I was really excited to photograph their engagement session at the Experimental farm.  We went the week before to scout out the locations and found a whole pile of amazing spots, so all three of us were excited to do the shoot.  On the day of the shoot, the weather ended up being beautiful:  sunshine and not too hot.  It was perfect.

James and Shawna wanted to make sure that they had some photos taken in front of the corn fields, since corn plays a special part in bringing these two together.  You see, James used to be a truck driver who brought corn to the ethanol plant four times a day, which is where Shawna worked.  They would talk to each other each time he delivered a load of corn and finally after three months of talking to each other, James finally gathered enough courage to ask Shawna out on a date.  And if memory serves me correct, on one of their earlier dates, when they were strolling amongst the corn, they had their first kiss.  How cute is that?!?!

I am looking forward to photographing their rustic wedding at Strathmere this October.

Update:  Check out James and Shawna’s wedding photos.

Custom DVDs in Custom DVD case

Custom DVD in Custom DVD case (Ottawa & Gatineau Wedding Photographers)

Last year I switched things up and used a different supplier to make these beautiful custom designed DVDs and DVD cases for my wedding clients.  I will also be offering them to my portrait clients who purchase the CD of all of the photos from their regular portrait session.

I think that they are beautiful and I love the high quality of them.  They were recommended by some of my photography friends and I am so glad that I made the switch.  They have been a hit with my wedding clients.
