Cake Smash

One year baby cake smash photo shoot (Gatineau Photographers)

A few weeks ago I shot my first baby cake smash with an adorable little girl.   For anyone not familiar with what this is, it is a portrait session that is shot around a baby’s first birthday.  First, the baby will have a regular mini photo session in a nice outfit.  Then, the baby’s nice outfit is removed (in order to keep it from getting coloured icing all over it) and then the baby is placed by a small cake or large cupcake with lots of gooey icing.  They are free to do whatever they please to that cake, which may or may not involve squishing their hands or feet into it and maybe even eat some of it if they are inclined.  Well, this little girl was not really into getting too icky and she was definitely not in the mood for cake.  But thems the breaks when you are working with a one-year-old.  I have come to understand that you cannot push a baby to do anything that they don’t want to do–including eating cake.  But I still managed to get some good shots and had fun while doing it.

For each cake smash photo session, the parents are in charge of arranging to bring a small cake or cupcake to be smashed.  This is due to food allergies as you will know your own child’s eating restrictions.  For those wanting a healthier version of the traditional cake, there are several places in Ottawa that make gluten-free , nut and egg free/vegan friendly as well as sugar free cakes.  You can contact any of the above mentioned bakeries for more info and to tell them exactly what you are looking for.

I would love to shoot your baby’s cake smash.  Just send me an e-mail and we can arrange a day and time that works for you and your precious baby.  To promote this I am having a deal in which you would receive a 10″x10″ cake smash collage print similar to the one below for a keepsake of your baby’s first milestone birthday.

Take a look at some of my other cake smash photography.
